Replacing almost every starter from a team that went 2-8, West
Mesa head coach Anthony Ansotigue said the Mustangs were
about “a year or two away from where we want to be.” Sophomore
Daniel Ayala slides into the quarterback position, replacing
Brandon Kenton who moves to running back after breaking his
collarbone at QB last year. Ayala will hope to form a connection
with fellow sophomore Tim Drennen at wideout. Three-year
starting center Darien Baca is the lone returning offensive
lineman, while the defensive line will be even younger, with
zero returning starters. Ansotigue is hoping nose tackle
Vincent Delgado, a junior, can anchor the defensive line. The
second level is a bit more experienced for the Mustangs,
with Matthew Romero returning at inside linebacker and
Abed Jean-Charles on the outside.

Hope Christian steamrolled through most of
its 2018 campaign, beating Tularosa in the second
round of the playoffs, 67-14, before being upset in
the semifinals by fifth-seeded Robertson. Wide
receiver Ryan Cosper is back to help the Huskies
finish it off this season. Meanwhile, St. Pius X is
also trying to get back on top. After taking over
for long-time coach San Juan Mendoza following
a 12-1 season for the Spartans in 2016, head
coach David Montoya has St. Pius X back on the
upswing. The Spartans are coming off an 8-4
season, a one-game improvement over 2017,
and they return talent on offense in running
back Isaiah Griffin and on defense in end
Brody Cast.
