MEET THE COACH
Roderick Williams, Cibola
How did you fi rst get interested in coaching? Did you
have somebody who got you excited about coaching as a
career?
I had a teacher that inspired me to be a teacher and I loved
football, so they went hand in hand.
What would you have become professionally if not
a teacher/coach? What appealed to you about that
profession?
Fireman, so I could work in public service.
Tell us about the most memorable game you’ve ever coached. Who was it against,
what was at stake and why is it your favorite?
It was our 2014 playoff win against Cleveland High School. We were a 12-seed and they were a
five-seed. We came out with our hair on fire and won the game 42-28.
Please name three things which you consider vital to the
long-term health and success of your program.
Why those three?
• Player safety. Especially in the area of concussion concerns.
• Promoting the youth level football. It is the lifeline for high school
football.
• Marketing the game. Making the game appealing as kids have lots
of alternative sports to choose from these days.
Beyond the game, what is your favorite part of the week’s preparation?
Why?
Seeing kids learn new skills and applying the information they learn throughout the week.
